That is almost always an expensive endeavor. Take that poster to your local frame shop and it'll be cheap if you come out $100 poorer. That's for one piece. Odds are if it's a poster-sized print that'll be closer to two Benjamins.....

......I'm not even exaggerating here. Properly matting and framing art gets expensive quick.

Over the last nine months or so I've been finally matting and framing the various prints I've collected over the last couple of decades. No, I am not rich.

I've saved a ton of cash by purchasing a matt cutter, buying glass & plexiglass from the home store to cut myself. Now as I'm a bit of a dice snob, I'm not really going to use these for my regular dice, but if someone comes to a game sans dice? Here you go. I used to keep an ugly pink set for players to borrow when they forgot their dice, which worked fine until they rolled well and the player preferred them over their regular dice. No more expensive dice to loan out now!

The second find was something I've been on the lookout for a while as a supply item for terrain building: a smooth disposable aluminum baking pan. There are times when you need some metal for a build, but aluminum foil is just too thin. These pans are much more rigid, but easily cut & sliced. My main problem is that overwhelmingly most pans of this weight are highly patterned. It is hard to find a nice piece of straight, clean thicker metal that you can work easily, but this fits the bill perfectly. One pan also goes a long way, material wise.

The last item, and something I wish I had at my last con, is a simple 4x6 (or 6x4 as they labeled it) plexiglass picture holder. These things run at least three times as much (if you buy in a 10 pack!) at the office supply store and are easily overlooked there to begin with. Now, at a buck this is a cheaper/frugal resource.....but what do you use this for? Well, these work well as a player or a GM. Now in your home game everyone generally knows each other, but at a convention game? With a larger 4x6 notecard and a good black marker you have a relatively unobtrusive name placard. The player (or GM) can write the PC's name on the card and no more "What's your name again?" or calling players by name instead of PC name, which can be an in-game drawback. Also, if the GM needs it, you could put the PC's AC on the card as well.

Now these particular picture holders are angled back a bit, which I like a bit more at the table, but if you find/use the more vertical ones, you can add another card facing the player where they can record info if they want, assuming they have a wet-erase marker than can write on plastic. I've used this as a player to keep track of expendable items, HP tally....and when I was playing HackMaster, largest hit (was worth extra HP to have the "biggest hit" of the game and IIRC taking the biggest critical hit as well).

{"$t":"Christopher Stogdill
$t":"http://www.blogger.com/profile/07831712020518883173
$t":"noreply@blogger.com"},"gd$image":
"media$thumbnail":{"xmlns$media":"http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v1mR0nyOfCM/YMZlttqLA4I/AAAAAAAAeyo/9YwPTVQvMXsjOHpncU-ORcKj0Cp3BFeYACLcBGAsYHQ/s72-w200-h200-c/Frugal-GM-Logo-Time-Idea.jpg
72
72"},"thr$total":{"$t":"1
$t":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905516554909677599.post-3383697286796490013
$t":"2016-07-09T12:18:00.004-06:00
$t":"2016-07-09T12:18:40.381-06:00
"$t":"Frugal GM Review: 50 Ships of the Harbor, Vol. 13
html","$t":"

This week I decided to check out a rather cheap offering from a publisher that pops up a lot in my "feed" over at DriveThruRPG: Fishwife Games.

I've really tried to distinguish the difference between being cheap and being frugal, a subtlety that is often lost on people I run into online and at conventions. I really didn't need a list of 50 ships for my own games, which I thought might be a bit more useful as far as an honest review goes.

This is a small download at 600KB and only two pages. The first page is the cover and the second is a wall of text. The contents are clearly listed on the product page, so it shouldn't be surprised that the content is a bit on the light side, which is both good and bad. This product is basically just a list product, and at being the 13th volume I wouldn't be surprised if Fishwife Games just made a random ship generator and had it spit out 50 ships they could jam onto a page.

If that was the case personally I'd rather pay a bit more an purchase the generator, but that is very much a personal preference and not a factor in this review.

One thing I like is the simple fact that going into this purchase nobody should disappointed because you should know exactly what you are paying 75¢ for. List products like this are great for GMs that run a looser sandboxish game, like I prefer to do. I survive GMing a sandbox campaign by front-loading a lost of information in the form of lists. A lot of background info I keep fast and loose, referring to it as I need to. Then I'll make some notes on/in my lists and keep on keeping on. If my players were doing anything near the ocean I'd want a list of ships I could refer to if needed.

Personally I don't need a lot of info and for my game prep, 50 Ships Of The Harbor, Volume 13 gives me exactly the level of detail I need. The only problem I really have with this particular product is that cramming all the "product" to one page is too much. Instead of a tiny 8 point font I'd rather have a much larger font spread out over two pages. Realistically speaking, nobody is going to print the cover, so a three page PDF where I could print the content front & back onto one page would make a link product like this so much more useful.

I'm not a big fan of the PDF being locked down with a password either, and while I'm reasonably sure the front page graphic is Public Domain, I'm not keen on the art not being credited. Lastly on something like this I'd like to see the PDF properties field being filled in. Minor points for most, but if I was to collect a series of these list products, like volumes 1-13, I'd want to delete the cover sheet and assemble them all into one PDF.

Overall I like this product, but I think it needs some tweaking to make it useful for my game. The issues of too small a font and an inability to efficiently collect a series of these PDF is a bit much for my tastes. A while back I was gifted a set of Dragonlock Miniatures: Lizardfolk Set 1.

I love the idea of being able to print out miniatures on-demand, assuming you have a decent 3D printer......which I do not. There are places locally that will 3D print items for you. The initial online quotes I got were, as one of my gaming buddies would say, recockulous (which is a step-up from ridiculous) and I was never able to get a real quote from an actual person, even after getting in touch with someone from one of these places.

I pretty much thought to myself, "Well that just sucks" and had pretty much given up on getting anything printed until I discovered the main office of the local library has a 5th Gen MakerBot. After reserving some printer time (a 2 hour block) I lucked out by showing up early and was able to print out two minis from the five mini set. Each print took approximately 80 minutes from start to finish. I could have printed at a lower resolution, shaving the print time to 45 minutes each.

I'll have to admit I loved watching these minis print out one tiny layer at a time. I couldn't make out each individual layer being deposited, but after a while I could see tiny ridge lines from each layer. Since I had the benefit of the extra time I printed these two out at Tom's (Tom Tullis, of Fat Dragon Games) specifications, well at least I used PLA and printed at 100 microns (0.1 mm).

I had some pictures from the print, but I forgot to switch over to the macro mode and, well they suck. I have a feeling that there is a lot to learn when it comes to 3D printing and I'm certain that once I get over the learning curve of just not 3D printing, but how to finish off these prints, that I'd be happier with the results.

These minis feel quite sturdy, a lot better than the plastic from the Reaper Bones figures do. I don't know if I should be priming them differently that I do my other figures, but again...learning curve. The minis definitely look better than they do in the pictures because you won't be sticking them up to you eyeball for extreme nit-picking observation.

Outside of the need for a 3D printer the cost for these minis is outstanding. $5 for the files and a pittance for the plastic to print them out. That being said.....I think I'd be a bit on the fence about using these miniatures if I had my own printer. If I needed an army of Lizardfolk and I wasn't going to paint them.....it is a no-brainer for me. The only real issue I have is the time investment. With minis I'd probably be more inclined to order a couple of Bones figures and paint them up. Five Lizardmen figures would be, well let's say $15 for the set. Definitely more that the $5 for these minis, but I'd make more than $15 in the 7 hours or so it'd take to print up this set.

For me it comes down to the time investment, and how many minis I wanted.
