d30 Challenge Day 3

d30 Challenge Day 3
This is my 3rd entry in the d30 Challenge, which is a bastardization of an idea I first saw on Mark "CMG" Clover's feed. Now I'm a sucker for these things and I know some folks aren't so while I'm committed to answering one question about my favorite hobby each day, and putting together a d30 table before the end of the month, I know not everyone is so interested. I'll put the question & answer after the break, posting late in the day, and not promoting this on G+ so those who don't like this kind of thing should be exposed only minimally.

I think this is the best I can do....
Day 3's question is "Favorite PC Class".

My 1st thought was to say "Magic-User", but when I thought about it most of my PCs are fighter types. I'd say my coolest PC is a Magic-User (Specifically a Double-Specialist Invoker), but time and time again I come back to fighters. Aside from the fact I always try to start a new system with an Archer, most of the games I play in are combat heavy so I play a fighter. My current HackMaster PC is a heavy-hitting Dwarven Fighter that wields a Greater Warhammer.

Lately when I create a PC I try to do it as part of a group creation session and I make something to fill a role the party needs. When I made this last PC I had rolled once-in-a-lifetime stats....a complete statistical anomaly. If not for the fact that the creation was witness by at least two fellow GMs, I wouldn't believe me about those rolls. Seriously......I think my lowest stat was 12 and I had a couple 18s and a couple 16s. I could choose to be any race-class combo and be good at it.

The party really needed a fighter, and a tanky one at that. When I play fighters I'm usually all about speed & stealth. Hit fast and run....a ranger would be ideal. Nope, they needed someone who could take a hit and help take down the bigger foes. Now I don't play with that group any longer, but my current group, which is a small trio of players, really needs that tank as well. On more than one occasion some brute force coupled with a generous dose of luck has kept the part from losing one or all of the PCs.

Yeah....I'm digging the fighter. If the group got large enough we could expand out I think I'd give a Magic-User a go though.....
