I've always been a fan of free maps, but sometimes a free map can only take you so far.
The next best thing is free mapping software.
Hexographer is a simple-to-use...wait for it....hex map maker. It comes in two versions, a free version and a paid version. If you like hex maps and you end up using Hexographer with any frequency, you might like spending $25 to move up to the paid version which lets you work offline.
A lot of times I like to use hex maps for what I like to think of as "quick and dirty" maps. Even when I take my time and make some hand-drawn overland maps they end up looking closer to hex maps, without the hexes.
