Frugal GM Review: Creature Compendium

Frugal GM Review: Creature Compendium
I haven't been shy about admitting that I tend to have a lot of 4 and 5 stars reviews because I tend to pick up things I really like, or at least think I'll like. This inevitably leads to most of my reviews being "good reviews", which might lead some to think I over-inflate things.

I don't think I do this and (obviously) attribute this to the aforementioned tendency to pick up "good" stuff to begin with...especially when it is on sale for only $2!

Case in point is this weeks review of New Big Dragon's Creature Compendium. I've picked up several items from NBD and have loved every one of them. I'm pretty sure their website was an inaugural entry on my "+12 Links of Helpfulness". I expect that when Richard puts out a new product I'll like it.....and that also means I'll have a high standard of expectations.

Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right!

Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right!
Before I start in on my review today I went through my normal routine of perusing a list of websites and interweb hangouts. Most of these are online comics, a couple of "news" sites, and only two social media feeds.

I'm deeply disturbed by a public G+ post by Dyson Logos. We've shared some emails and words of encouragement and never have I seen anything to indicate he is less than a stand up guy, and his post only reinforces my point. I usually save rants for my other blog, but this soap-box moment belongs here.

While I encourage you to read that post, the TL;DR version is that he commented on a game system that had some sexist rules, how he didn't like those rules, and some people are losing their shit over his statements.

I'm much more stereotypical gamer than I'd like to admit sometimes. 43 yo white male, overweight, from the Midwest who has been playing since I was seven or eight. I can tell you for certain I've played games that had sexist rules and didn't even notice....well at least at first. I've played in convention games where a player has been mean, sexist, and derogatory towards women at the table and I didn't even notice, much less take any action.

In my own defense though if I see what I think is a stupid rule I just don't use it and for that one player, well that's all on me. I was in the middle of losing my PC and wasn't paying attention to what was going on. I took action the next day, but that was less than optimal.

The way I see it we play these games to have fun and it isn't cool to have fun at the expense of someone else (Schadenfreude maybe). To actually codify this in a ruleset is inexcusable. Most of play some sort of fantasy setting with mythical creatures and magic or otherworldly technology, so what is the purpose of stating all women are inferior to men in some way?

I've met women "doing a man's job" that I thought were clearly inferior in some important aspect of said job, but you know what? It wasn't because they were female....I've seen some sucktastic men "doing a man's job". This is in the real-world. In the fantasy world? I would expect Elves to be prettier than Humans and Humans to be stronger than Halflings, but there is no place for requiring such delineations strictly on the basis of gender because you have some anecdotal real-world experiences.

Even...and this is just me playing "Devil's Advocate" it was ok to put sexism and misogyny into an RPG game, it is not ok to threaten people who have a different opinion on what is appropriate in a RPG ruleset, setting, or home-game. If the Edition Wars have taught us anything it should be there isn't room for this, but there is enough room for everyone to belly up to the table to play....assuming they can "play nice".

I for one applaud Dyson for taking the stand he has. In this respect he's definitely a better man than I am, but I'm working on it.

I'll have the review up later today....

HUGE Dave Graffam Model Sale over at DriveThruRPG!

HUGE Dave Graffam Model Sale over at DriveThruRPG!
Dave Graffam Models is having a HUGE sale over at DriveThruRPG that you might want to check out. It's actually a little better than the $1 Sale from last year (I stole this graphic from my previous sale post)....

.....how much better? I'd say about 5% better!

Many models are on sale for 95¢ Now not all of the models are on sale, but those that are on sale are more than 50% off. Several of the bundles, which are already discounted quite a bit, aren't 50% off, but they are at a cheaper price.

I have no idea how long this sale will last, so you might want to jump on it while you can.

Free GM Resource: The Hidden Tomb of Slaggoth the Necromancer

Free GM Resource: The Hidden Tomb of Slaggoth the Necromancer
This week's Free GM Resource is an adventure that's been out for a while, but I only found out about it.....actually I don't know when I saved this link.

The Hidden Tomb of Slaggoth the Necromancer comes from a nearly two-year-old posting on the Papers & Pencils blog. The blog is a treasure trove of tidbits you might find useful, so I'd poke around a bit.

I's say the Hidden Tomb is a 3-5ish adventure, but it isn't statted as such, or really statted specifically at all. Some of the artwork could have been processed better and I wish some break out text wasn't in a dark grey box, but overall a real nice 1st effort that is far better than my first couple years of adventure writing for sure.

You should check out the blog and the adventure today!

Frugal GM Review: Knights of the Dinner Table 20 Years of Covers

Frugal GM Review: Knights of the Dinner Table 20 Years of Covers
I had a couple sentence "review" of the Knights of the Dinner Table 20 Years of Covers book up on another site where it "mysteriously" disappeared. Normally this isn't something I'd review, for a couple of reasons, but due to the nature of this item it is eligible for review by my somewhat arbitrary standards.

1st off, I feel it is extremely important to note that while this is a book about the Knights of the Dinner Table comic and it was written by Barbara Blackburn, this is NOT a Kenzer & Company publication. The one star on this review is a shout-out to Barbara's work, otherwise I'd have seriously considered editing my review stars for a 0 star rating (I don't have one).

2nd off, I didn't purchase this book....technically my wife did as part of her funding of the Knights of the Dinner Table Live-Action Series on Kickstarter. The problems I've seen with this KoDT book stem from there.....

Go Over to DTRPG and Pick This up While You Can (for $2)

Go Over to DTRPG and Pick This up While You Can (for $2)
This is a product I think I'll be reviewing soon, but not today for a couple of reasons.

I do want to make everyone aware of New Big Dragon Games Unlimited's brand-spanking-new Creature Compendium. Richard just put up a post on his blog that he's released this a bit early so folks could take advantage of a 30% sale at Lulu.

He's also put it on big-time sale at DriveThruRPG, even though it technically isn't ready (the secondary reason I'll wait to review this). Next week he'll update the PDF with the niceties like bookmarks and links, but for now go over and pick it up for $2.

Seriously, why are your still reading this? Go over to and get your copy (or copies, if you take care of the Lulu deal as well) now, while you can. At $2 he's practically giving this thing away....

....and you're still reading this? Fine, I'll remark that the cover is actually black...I just inverted it because I wanted to see what my copy will look like if I print it at home, assuming I don't get a Lulu print.

If it makes you happy, you can always come back here after purchasing your copy of CC1. I'll wait....

Frugal GM Review: Pits & Perils

Frugal GM Review: Pits & Perils
Last month when I gave a bad review to my friend Matt's side adventure Bloodnut Pass I was kind of surprised by the results. Matt was fine with the review...he was trying to write a certain way (and succeeded)...but I hadn't heard of the rules system he wrote it for and when the author of that ruleset reached out....

....well I was surprised. James George was a retired Combat Weather officer and probably worked alongside some TACP guys I knew. Small world....

At this point I need another RPG system like I need a whole in the head, but I still pick them up to look at all too often. I still buy games I'll probably never play and I sure as hell don't turn down a free game. James sent me a download of his Pits & Perils  "Not looking for a review or anything like that, just wanted to share the love."

I'm not sure he's aware of my 1st two rules about this blog....

Frugal GM Links

My blog link toolbox
I got a message this morning that the website for a Free GM Resource I had listed was taken over by some sort of SPAM/Phishing site.

Obviously I don't go through and check the bazillion links I have on any regular basis, but if you come across something screwed up like this was, please do not hesitate to use the email contact form on the main page to let me know what is going. Please be specific so I can fix it or delete the links!

A big thanks to my anonymous tipster!
