d30 Challenge Day 1

d30 Challenge Day 1
This is my 1st entry in the d30 Challenge, which is a bastardization of an idea I first saw on Mark "CMG" Clover's feed. Now I'm a sucker for these things and I know some folks aren't so while I'm committed to answering one question about my favorite hobby each day, and putting together a d30 table before the end of the month, I know not everyone is so interested. I'll put the question & answer after the break, posting late in the day, and not promoting this on G+ so those who don't like this kind of thing should be exposed only minimally.

I think this is the best I can do....
Day 1's question is "How you got started".

My introduction to AD&D is totally due to peer pressure and a desire to emulate older, more "cool" family members as part of a stupid circle or similar behavior. My father had remarried & had another kid in 1977 (I actually don't remember when he got married). My step-mother's family lived in the Quad Cities (IL & IA) and she had a younger brother just a few years older than me. Her sister lived not a block away from her mother and her brother-in-law played AD&D in the earlier days. As far as I first "played" AD&D in the winter of 1978/79.

The younger uncle would "borrow" the older uncle's PHB and let me read it. We rolled up characters and played, but what we did I wouldn't really call playing the game.....we were playing a game though. Most of our supplies came from copies of the Blue Box and the Magenta Box, which were widely available at the local book stores.

I barely remember playing, but I definitely remember reading.

My real, honest-to-goodness "mostly appropriate" game of D&D was in middle school. I didn't exactly go to a good school in one of Boston's suburbs, but they decided to try a special weekly alternative period program where students could sign up to run & play in a wide array of activities. One 8th grader decided he'd run D&D (Red Box) and that was my 1st group. I played an Elf and was hooked. I don't remember how long my PC lived, but I do remember discovering what Green Slime was. My DM was pretty cool about it and let me live as a Green Slime/Elf hybrid for a little while. I think he did this just to keep me interested and it worked.

Today I love playing Elves and I hate Green Slime. I seldom use Green Slime as a monster and when I do I make sure the PCs get plenty of warning.
