Free GM Resource: Zoom Backgrounds Courtesy Dungeons & Toast (Online Toastmasters Group)

Free GM Resource: Zoom Backgrounds Courtesy Dungeons & Toast (Online Toastmasters Group)
This week's Free GM Resource is also a player resource and technically isn't a twofer, but if it was up to me I'd suggest if you can, make it a twofer....it'll make sense, trust me.

First off, I'm a big fan of Toastmasters. I think it's a great (not free) resource, but checking them out is free, which is the twofer. Now I don't know about trying to do Toastmasters online, but if Dungeons & Toast can make it work, then you might be able to as well.

Seriously though, I think Toastmasters can help anyone become a better player or GM. Anything that helps you speak and interact with other people can't be a bad thing.

The freebie is from the Dungeons & Toast website and it is a collection of Zoom backgrounds. Now clearly your mileage may vary, but my "home" group is largely based in the Dallas/Ft Worth Metroplex, but I am most definitely not. I really could've used one of these background last weekend when we gamed.

Now all of the backgrounds are not available to outsiders, but there are plenty of backgrounds you might find useful, and if you're free Friday nights (except last Friday of the month) at 6:45pm to 8:30pm PST....

Convention Report 2026 North Texas RPG Convention

Convention Report 2026 North Texas RPG Convention
Last weekend was my 10th North Texas RPG Convention....unfortunately my 1st NTXRPG was in 2016, so anyone doing the math can note it should be my 11th. Sad part is that while I had moved to just 3 hours from the convention in 2018, the job I had moved cross-country for on May 31st told me June 1st that I wasn't going to be hired/there wasn't a job anymore. Not cool and I was if low-key freak-out mode so spending money to attend a convention wasn't high on my priority list.

I mention this mostly because this year's convention was similarly tainted because I was losing my job the day after the con. Same job and even the same employer, even though the contract had been awarded to other companies a couple of times between 2018 and 2026.

Tiny Jesus Sees Me EVERYWHERE

What was different this time is that most of my expenses were front-loaded, or minimized, for this convention, and money wasn't as big of an issue.

Anyway, I showed up to the hotel on Tuesday, even though the con is technically Thursday through Sunday. There is a "Pre Con, Get it On" Wednesday. It was nice to be able to casually make my way to Dallas and seemingly have all the time in the world to chill before the convention. I was a little surprised how many people came in on Tuesday, but with some games available on Wednesday, it made sense.

The last few months I have been seeing these tiny Jesus figures seemingly everywhere. I think it's a low-key campaign directed at me somehow.....ok, not really, but I have been finding them all over the place and never really expected.

Now the weatherman (ok website/Google) said there was a low chance of brief rain for a day or two of the convention, but Tuesday would be clear. This year I was trying to have a sales booth in the dealer hall and had packed my stuff in cardboard boxes. Of course there was a torrential downpour pretty much every....single...day. Before the heavy stuff really came down I was that guy and backed my truck right up to the convention space entrance. So if you didn't know there is a tiny pedestrian overhang for that entrance. It is so not a loading dock, but this entrance wasn't really being used because it was a good day early. I unpacked my loading cart and started off-loading before the boxes got soaked. My room key didn't work on the door and some manager saw me and headed over, waving his hands.

Frugal GM Booth

Yeah....I thought he was going to yell at me for being pulled up to the entrance, but no...he was trying to tell me that the automatic door was working. He completely got what & why I was pulled up like I was. Once I got "everything" (I had already checked in and took my luggage up to my room) unloaded and inside he casually told me that the dealer room had just been finished setting up and when I asked if I could drop off or set up already he was cool with it. So basically I got to be the 1st person setup at the con.

Whiskey Book Gift

Got soaked enough that it looked like I had been sweating all day since the rain was heavy and straight down. JE Shields (and Mrs Shields, I suspect she likes her privacy) bebopped over and offered to help me haul my crap...well the stuff for the Whisky tasting and my cart, up to the room. We also ran into Gary and Lisa Oliver checking in. After I was unloaded I grabbed a couple bottles I had gotten for the Olivers and headed over. They had a gift for me as well and gave me this pretty cool Whiskey book. I've barely started reading it, but it has some really early history of American whisky, which is a fascinating subject for me. The book has this faux leather feel and so far the inside is just as good as the outside.

Buy Me Gyro and Tell me I'm Pretty

My buddy Shad flew in once again from the SLC area to stay with me and game. His general plan is to buy my dinners at the convention in exchange for using the "extra" bed in my room, and my hotel status also adds in club room access/breakfast. This means I generally don't have food expense at the con. I did grab some quick dinners a couple times when he was in games so my food expenses were not zero....but cheaper than if I had just stayed home. We had gyros the first night and I couldn't resist trying to take a cheeky photo....

Booth Babe
Speaking of cheeky photos, Shad completely surprised me with a specific booth outfit that he had most definitely not told me about. I didn't really expect him to hang out at the booth, but he was planning on it and came loaded for bear....he even had a pink name tag that read "Booth Babe", and his name of course. Smart move or someone might have asked to "borrow" the name tag.

Thursday went well enough and in the evening we had what I'm assuming....hard to remember, was the 6th (or 7th depending on POV) annual Whisky Tasting. Here's a link to the YouTube video for the particularly brave. Despite all of my best efforts we did not have a full group, which torqued me a little bit, but we had "observers" who were able to jump in and take part which was awesome in my book. I have a few new friends/associates now and got to try some cool....alcohol in what ended up being a in-place "after party". The only part of the night that was actually bad was that I had totally boned things up by not giving specific instructions on the little "test" I had at the end. That and I should have made the test easier. Live & learn.

With the exception of Saturday's auction, my days were filled manning my booth and the evenings...well at this point there's just Friday and Saturday, with games. I ran one and played one. The game I ran was just "ok". It wasn't my players, it was me. I think I had things set up enough, but the players got a randomly-determined magic sword that could detect trap and secret doors. This let them pretty much steam-roll through the dungeon. They did a great job turning a big monster fight into a couple of relatively easy smaller fights and the BBG of the dungeon rolled really good for a reaction roll and basically told the party to eff off....and they did. My biggest mistake of the night, and it's my opinion there is always a mistake made every session, was that I completely forgot to roll for wandering monsters. I had a freaking sub table for the dungeon and everything! The night was relatively combat light because there should have been a couple of wandering monsters. To be fair though, the party did do a good job of minimizing the combat there was already, which might not have been the case if they had those wandering monsters.

I played in a pick-up game Saturday before the midnight auction. I probably should have taken that opportunity to rest up because I was a mess Sunday, and that was before the drive home. It wasn't an unsafe drive or anything, just tired. I think I was in bed before 2100.

Now for the good stuff: my "haul" from the convention.

Convention Swag
I should start off with the convention swag. There was the normal bookbag and smaller dice bag with this year's logo. Also included was a can coozie, a bottle of hand sanitizer, a Hyperborea bumper sticker (not shown since it is already on my luggage), a Reaper mini, three Reaper paints, and a Bunnies & Burrows mini.

Book and Zines

My 1st purchase of the convention was a book from Bad Mike's booth, and the missing Echoes from Fomalhaut Zines I didn't have. I really thought there were fewer issues, so I got a lot. Haven't even started to look at them.

Usually my favorite vendor at NTRPG is Ettin Games. I swear that everything I buy from them is either a sweet deal, or probably 20% overpriced, but clearly something I'm willing to pay. For the record, the "overpriced" stuff, I'm happily paying over alleged value because I get to hold the damn thing in my hands versus having to buy at an auction and trust it was accurately described and then paying for shipping & handling and pray it wasn't destroyed in transport. One of these days, preferably when I have more $$$ to spend, I'm going to pay David's store a visit and (again) happily spend too much money.

HackMaster

My first purchase was a set of shelf-worn, but otherwise great shape, HackMaster 4th Edition modules, one of which is practically a splat-book sized adventure. He also had even better shape HackMaster PHBs and GMGs, and I was sorely tempted. IIRC I spent $50 for the lot. They were unpriced and he made me an offer. If I ever run one, the price for all would be so worth it.

Holmes D&D

At the end of the con I picked up this really nice-looking Holmes boxed set. It was missing the dice, which is likely the only reason it was still available for sale. Thing is I have a couple sets of bagged Holmes dice and would love to marry the dice and the boxed set missing said dice....so win/win. To round up my purchase to the $20's I handed him instead of change I grabbed a trio of minis in badly need of paint.

New minis
At least technically speaking they won't be added to my "gray pile of shame".

Greyhawk Booklet for White Box

At the end of the con I made a quick jaunt around the room, with particular emphasis on Ettin Games, and they had a White Box booklet I thought I needed. Unfortunately my phone would not bring up the Google Sheets where I had typed out what booklets I still needed, so I had to go up to my room, down to the front desk for a new room key (they locked me out prematurely), and then back up to the room to use my laptop. Of course I had conflicting information so it looked like I had two booklets marked as both in my collection and still needing to be purchased. Luckily for me the only one that was only marked as definitely being needed was the Greyhawk booklet. I ran back down to the booth being packed away but David was more than happy to pull out the booklet for me to buy. Now I only need the Eldritch Wizardry booklet then I will have a complete White Box.

Con adventures

I'm not counting an adventure I had purchased previously from Pacesetter Games and picked up at the Con, but another I bought specifically had to wait until Saturday to get since it was their Con Module. I also got a PWYW Bunnies & Burrows adventure at the registration desk. It was off to the side so I don't think everybody even saw it.

Manda Original Art

For art this year I got two things. First was this painting from Manda I picked up at the Saturday Auction. Manda is known more for her video game work and probably more so for being married to Jeff Dee (of TSR & Villains and Vigilantes fame). There was something that just "got me" on this piece and I would've sworn I have seen this before....like in a weird déjà vu kind of way. She painted this piece this year at the convention, but evidently she had started it last year at the convention, so I probably had actually seen it last year.  Still not sure where I'm going to put this. I had thought of giving it to my mother as a gift, but something tells me my father wouldn't like it and it'd just collect dust somewhere.

HHH Art

I was also give my choice of inked art from Keelan Halvorsen (from His Heinous Harvest). He made it sound like a gift, but I suspect it was my fulfillment piece from my pledge of his KS campaign. Either way I'm good. Even though this doesn't seem like a product I'd use in my game (the HHH KS), I was quick to back it after playing in one of his games and hearing about this Kickstarter, not from Keelan, but from my buddy Shad.

Freebies

There were some small odds & ends I was given, including a sticker from Jason Brauncowski, a couple of dice, and ....of all things....a condom. It was a Midnight Auction joke thing. Honestly probably the best birth control possible because seeing Bad Rob in a speedo is going to kill any sex drive I had.....

Overall a good convention, like always. Looking forward to year #11 where I get to purchase another special T-Shirt for 10 years of convention attendance.

Free GM Resource: The Homebrewery

Free GM Resource: The Homebrewery
This week's Free GM Resource is an interesting website called The Homebrewery that is dedicated to helping the GM make homebrew....."stuff" that looks ready to drop into an official D&D 5th edition rulebook. It's more than just a drag & drop text into the page for auto-formatting, although there is a fair bit of that as well.

The site steps you through the process of working with the CSS that makes the webpage works.

The results are pretty cool, even if you don't care about 5th edition, I could see anyone wanting to pretty up their work using this page. Here are examples of the output:

Free GM Resource: AD&D Character Generator

Free GM Resource: AD&D Character Generator
This week's Free GM Resource is a bit of a work in progress, but probably 95% there (as far as I can tell). It's a pretty cool AD&D Character Generator. I checked it out & rolled up a quick (kind of crappy) 1st level Thief. I only ran into two issues, and the 1st was my fault because somehow I started at step 2 instead of step 1....not quite sure how I managed to do that. The other was that the page wouldn't let me enter in my character's name or my name.

The results came up with basically a 7 page booklet, but the 1st page was just a name page.

As far as a quick & easy generator goes, works well enough. Some things look like they don't work, but they actually do, like exceptional STR. Instead of rolling that with attribute rolls, you roll it later....which actually makes sense since not every class can make use of exceptional STR, so why roll it in Step 2?

I did find it...interesting, how easy it was to roll a character with all 18's and a 18/97 for STR.......well, when I rolled a second character.

"Free" GM Resource: Engrudo (Potential hobby paste)

"Free" GM Resource: Engrudo (Potential hobby paste)
OK, first off, technically not free....but odds are you have the ingredients on-hand, so no extra cost.

This is a basic glue/paste that you can use as a cheap fixative in hobby builds. Once made you can add a bit of a tweak to make it last a couple of weeks, but since it is cheap, feel free to toss & remake as needed.

I was needing some glue for a project and had run out of the fancy stuff, and while I did have some school glue, I hate using that stuff for...well pretty much anything it's designed for. Usually it's a cheap binder/ingredient in other things.

Basic Engrudo Recipe
Ingredients
  • (2) parts cold water
  • (1) part all-purpose flour (e.g., 2 cups of water and 1 cup of flour)
Instructions
  1. Mix the Flour: In a bowl, whisk the flour into half of the cold water until it has a smooth, milky consistency and is completely free of lumps.
  2. Boil the Water: Pour the remaining water into a pot and bring it to a boil on the stove.
  3. Combine: Turn the heat off or low, and slowly pour the flour-water mixture into the boiling water while whisking continuously.
  4. Thicken: Return to medium heat and stir constantly for 5–10 minutes until the mixture thickens to a gravy-like consistency and clears slightly.
  5. Cool: Remove from heat and let it cool completely before using. It will thicken more as it cools.
Tips & Storage

  • Prevent Lumps: Always use cold water to dissolve the flour initially. Using warm water will cause it to clump instantly.
  • Preservation: Add a teaspoon of salt or vinegar to act as a natural preservative.
  • Storage: Store leftover engrudo in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for about 1 to 2 weeks.
As a bit of a twofer, here's a good Papier-Mâché tutorial....it doesn't use the engrudo, but you could use that to glue things made with it together.

"Free" GM Resource: Level 6/7 BX Adventure

"Free" GM Resource: Level 7/8 BX Adventure
OK, I know that I usually post a Free GM Resource and technically this is not free, but Pay-What-You-Want.

Hear me out though.....

How often do you come across a higher-level BX Adventure? Like...never, or at least that is my experience.

The God Towers of the Elophant is available as a PWYW adventure over at DTRPG. The links will take you there and should be associated with the author's affiliate link, not mine.....changing that would be a bit of a d**k move, IMNSHO.

Now if you want, you can head on over to the author's discourse website, The Cauldron. I'm not used to this type of site, and it felt weird to me trying to poke about, so I didn't too much.

**********

I did download and look at this adventure, and it's not an adventure in the traditional sense, but a large underground location inhabited by two disparate groups that mostly co-exist, but there will inevitably be some big conflict that the party should be present for. To me it felt like a much longer version of my "Tweak & Toss" Adventure Seeds.

I like it, but I can see  lot of GMs being disappointed if they had different expectations. I think I'll use it sometime, if that's saying anything....

Free GM Resource: 1shotadventures

Free GM Resource: 1shotadventures
I came across this blog consisting of adventures written by J.C. Connors.

The adventures are for a variety of systems, and he has some some VTT assets and character sheets (for GURPS) available as well. Mr. Connors also has a YouTube channel, but that's a separate thing....

As of the time of this post there's more than 40 (!) adventures, and if you want to include the fact that some are written for multiple systems, then that number is closer to 100 (sorry, but I'm not counting all of them).

I suggest bookmarking and checking it out.

Free GM Resource: Mark Gosbell's itch.io Page

Free GM Resource: Mark Gosbell's itch.io Page
I was looking for some map icons the other day and I found some on itch.io. While I was going through them I realized a lot of what I was looking at was being made, and shared, by one guy: Mark Gosbell.

Instead of just sharing the free "thing" I was looking for I wanted to just share his whole page, which has 15 different freebie resources.....a Quindecuplefer?

Instead of linking to individual freebies, here's a link (one of several) to the whole page.

Free GM Resource: Some 3d Printing Files from MojiBake

Free GM Resource: Some 3d Printing Files from MojiBake
I was look at/thinking of some 3d printed coins for a future project and ended up on a Kickstarter that is ending in less than a day from when I post this. I wasn't familiar with the company running said Kickstarter, Mojibake, but I did go to their website anyway.

I did discover that there were two sets of freebie downloads you could get for registering for emails, which I generally loathe, but if i was a smart man I'd have an email setup just for that kind of thing.....

...but anyway, this page had a link for some Dwarven Coin .stl files and this page (the homepage) had a couple figures, along with some printable labels and a card mat case. I do not know how long those coins will be available since that is a tie-in to the Kickstarter.

Most of their offerings are not my kind of thing, but the treasure chests that are the focus of the Kickstarter seem pretty cool to me.

Welcome Gift from MojiBake

Free GM Resource: Flail Ruleset (old-school fantasy brawler)

Free GM Resource: Flail Ruleset (old-school fantasy brawler)
This week I'd like to introduce you to a small RPG publisher and their new game coming out:

Games Omniverous: Flail

Described as "A chaotic, frontstabbing OSR fantasy brawler where everything goes wrong - on purpose. Trip, swing, and fumble through a world that hits back."

Games Omniverous is giving the game's ruleset away for "free". Technically it isn't free because you have to follow them on Backerkit, but you don't have to pay a dime, so it is also technically free. This is literally a limited-time offer, so here's a bit of a twofer in case you come across this too late: Game Omniverous Free Flail Online Tools.

I've skimmed through the rules and it seems to be a quicker-play type game with relatively simple mechanics where the players will be burning through gear and probably PC sheets. More of live fast, die young while rolling a handful of dice.  It has some promise.....

Free GM Resource: Freesound.org

Free GM Resource: Freesound.org
This week's Free GM Resource is a simple one: Freesound.org, a collection of freebie sound effects. If you're putting together a soundboard for your game, then you might need/want some good sound effects.

I think for the average fantasy TTRPG there might not be a lot of sounds you'll feel like downloading, but if you're doing a modern/futuristic game, then you'll likely find a lot more.

Like anything though, it'll depend on the level of effort you put in to it...

Free GM Resource: Pathfinder 2 Tools (Collection of Resources)

Free GM Resource: Pathfinder 2 Tools (Collection of Resources)
So this week's (I know, I know....more like this year's) Free GM Resource isn't so much a single thing....not even a twofer or a threefer, but a whole bunch of tools that have been gathered specifically for Pathfinder 2nd Edition.

Now I don't play Pathfinder, except for when I do (Looking at you Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous). I have these two games for my Xbox and I've reached basically dead-ends on both games because I don't know enough about the fricken game and my PCs suck.......

...which means I'm trying to either get a bit smarter or have to go back to Baldur's Gate, and I do not like the Xbox version.

Anyway, I came across the PF2 website which is a collection of tools. This site is bare-bones, pretty much just highlighting the resources, but you can cycle through specific categories:

  • Actual Play
  • Android
  • Applications
  • Character
  • Google Sheets
  • Guide
  • PDF
  • Podcast
  • Reference
  • Rules
  • Stream
  • Utility
  • Video
  • Virtual Tabletop
  • Website

Not every single resource is free, but they are overwhelmingly free or have free options. I actually could be wrong and everything listed is free, but I haven't checked everything available....

....now just to find something to help me to properly create my next PC.

Fat Dragon Games Anniversary Sale over at DriveThruRPG

Fat Dragon Games Anniversary Sale over at DriveThruRPG
Just a head's up that Fat Dragon Games is having an anniversary sale: 25-75% off. If I didn't already own almost everything they've made (very few products I'm not interested in...) I'd be all over it.

PWYW GM Resource: 2-Minute Tabletop

PWYW GM Resource: 2-Minute Tabletop
I know I haven't been posting in a while, well not here at least, and normally if I do so on Mondays it is with a Free GM Resource. I'm listing this as a Pay-What-You-Want because while there are prices on the main focus of the site's items, the creator has everything at a low cost (there's just a lot of items to be had), allows you to get everything for free, and gives you the ability to tip.....

....also has a pretty good Patreon as well. Seriously, if you want the option to be able to tinker with these maps (either adding assets or straight-up altering base files) and/or get more versions of the maps, $8 or $20 a month might very well be worth it. Far from free, but the maps are gorgeous and I'm seriously considering reestablishing my Patreon. EDIT: I went ahead and signed up for the $5 a map ($20/month) option as I see a lot of value in it.

I've posted about 2-Minute Tabletop a couple of times now, but pretty much only to promote specific parts of the website and not the thing as a whole, which is really an omission on my part. That's why I'm using the recycling option as well.

As of this post there are four main aspects to the site, although at first glance it looks like there are really three using four categories as the first one is a bit of a twofer and the last one is a get-absolutely-everything-in-one-go.

  • Maps
  • Map Assets
  • Tokens/Token Editor
  • Written Resources
I did the maps, clearly, and I didn't think I'd like the tokens too much but they seem to fit a nice sweet spot for me and look good with the maps. The map assets I've yet to play with, but they are literally used with the maps and therefore look good one them. For me, the written resources are a pass. If I were you I'd check them out though. Just because I don't want to use them, doesn't mean you'll not get some good value out of them.

I should mention that there are also guest posts/maps from time to time featured on the site as well.

Free GM (and Player) Resource: Groupfinder

Free GM (and Player) Resource: Groupfinder
I got a Blogger message notification a couple days ago from the folks over at Groupfinder, asking if I'd help promote their new site. Normally not really my thing, but after taking a look at the site, it's totally my thing and had I found the site organically I'd have shared it.....actually need to double-check I haven't done so already (ok...checked, I hadn't).

So Groupfinder is a site, and Android app, that pretty much does exactly what you'd expect an app with the name to do: help you find a (gaming) group. It's based out of Estonia, if that matters, and "is a platform where users can post their player profile or list their group and be publicly visible to all interested. Whether they are looking to play a game online or at your local town or city.

Now I did read the TOS and filled out an account, and....as expected, there were no open games within 200km. Yes, the distance is listed not in freedom units, but it is based out of Estonia....

Not super useful right now for in-person games, which is to be expected, but there were some online games listed for my time zone and there are some games stateside......so as this website/app grows and word gets "out there", numbers will improve. There's also messaging and the ability to post player profiles as well...

...and all for free.

Merry Christmas Gift to Y'all : Creature Catalogue Vol. 1

I wanted to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and decided that I should take one of the few Frugal GM titles that has a cost and make it free....well, technically Pay-What-You-Want, but please.....please put in $0.00 for the purchase price 110% guilt-free. I just know, from personal experience, that some people (ok, me) kind of need to pay for stuff in some fashion to mentally hold any value, so if that's you put in like $0.67 (my lucky number is 67 1/2......long story) or even $0.02, and call it good.

Creature Catalog Vol 1.

Free GM Resource: HexLands Web App

Free GM Resource: HexLands Web App
I haven't done a Free GM Resource in a while, and I almost missed this one (despite several emails on the subject) where Joe Wetzel of Inkwell Ideas put up a free hexmap creator/editor for people to use, presumably to promote his recently finished Kickstarter for his hexmaps (printed and digital).

Now I've been wanting to get some physical hexmap resources for myself and I have a very specific idea in mind for doing so, which means that the Kickstarter was on my radar and completely of no use to me so why bother checking it out?

I'm taking a moment to weed through my backlog of emails (filtering by the word "unsubscribe" is a periodic requirement for me) and I have one from Joe that I hadn't noticed. It wasn't to me, but to his previous Kickstarter backers and I saw "But the good news is now we've updated the free HexLands web app", so now I have to check it out, but definitely will not be using it, nor checking out the Kickstarter....

...oh wait, this is kind of cool. I like the addition of overlays.

It couldn't hurt to check out the Kickstarter....oh wait, it ended last Thursday....but you can still make a late pledge, and I'll be damned, the overlays are part of the project.

Well it still isn't compatible with what I have in mind, but for s***s & giggles let's see what he's wanting for the various reward levels. Of course he has it sliced and diced every which way.....and he has just the hex tiles and .PNGs only for a price I cannot turn down. This will save me HOURS of work for what I'm wanting to do.....

.....got me again Joe. Good on ya!

For everybody else, check out not only the HexLands web app, but all the other freebie generators (this new freebie is listed with the other yet) he has at InkWell Ideas. A bit more of a twofer for you.

.....and again, here is the better-late-than-never Kickstarter.

2025 Convention Report: Alaska RPG Con

2025 Convention Report: Alaska RPG Con
A couple of weeks ago I cashed in some air miles and hauled my ass.... self to Wasilla, AK to run five games at the inaugural Alaska RPG Con. An associate/buddy/friend of mine, the pretty cool RPG Artist JE Shields told me a couple of years ago his "dream" was to run a local game convention in his hometown of Wasilla, which is a 45' drive (or so) North of Anchorage.

Of course I told him that if he gets this convention set-up, I will come up from Oklahoma to help do whatever he needs. Run games, work a desk, be a general con-bitch.....whatever.

Now before any of you go and try to think I'm some sort of "good guy", please know I'm coming from a totally selfish place. One of the fun lessons I learned "as an adult" is that doing cool shit is hard. All those hopes & dreams? Wicked hard (imagine a Boston accent here..)! You know what isn't so hard, and much more rewarding than it should be? Helping someone else achieve their cool shit goals. Getting to strengthen a friendship, possibly make more friends, and get in some gaming?!

Kind of a no-brainer for me. Because I travel so much for work as it is, hopping on a plane & flying 1/8th around the world for a gaming weekend isn't much of a stretch.

Expensive oopsy

I got in on Thursday night and promptly screwed myself over by allowing the car rental place to upgrade my ride to a nice F150. Holy hell, that was a HUGE truck. Yeah, you know how driving a new car feels weird because you don't have a feel for the size of the new ride, or how it responds? So I missed the exit from the parking garage and pretty much got stuck on a way too-tight spiral ramp. The door at the bottom of the ramp wasn't properly in-line with the ramp and I had to do what felt like a 27 point turn to try and exit through the detailing room. I ended up scraping the rear quarter panel a bit, which I thought was far worse than it was, so mentally I was a bit messed up. Probably going to cost me the whole $500 deductible to fix....

Decorated Best Western

I know I mentioned I travel a lot for work, and because of this I am an unabashed Marriott guy. I wasn't too thrilled that I was staying in a Best Western, but I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. It felt more like a private hotel with some corporate signage. I had upgraded to a suite in case the convention needed more gaming space (Originally they thought they might need some more private space for "adult" RPGs). The room was nice, with a kitchenette and door separating the two rooms. It would have been easy to keep my personal space if there were gamers playing in the other room.

Convention Signage

The hotel was decorated for Halloween, even the Polar Bear above the vending machines was in costume. The con was being held in the meeting rooms downstairs, with the main room holding the majority of the con and two smaller rooms with gaming tables as well. When I showed up one of JE Shield's kids (I honestly do not remember which one) was drawing up the convention logo on a welcome sign. Clearly artistic talent runs in the family. I don't think I couldn't have even traced it as well! The registration desk wasn't quite setup yet so I would have to come back in the morning, which was fine because I needed to go to bed since my body was still on Oklahoma time.

The Dwarf is Down!
Stolen Pic from Will Kemp
I was running an adventure I wrote, and re-wrote I don't know how many times, each morning. This go-around I wrote for Old School Essentials (OSE). On Friday & Saturday night I ran some old HackMaster (4th Edition) adventures that I pretty much converted on the fly. Since I was running games in the 1st and 3rd gaming blocks of the day I had the 2nd 6-hour gaming block to get food and prep for my next game. I also had to make up the pre-gens because I had completely forgotten to print them before I left the house. Instead I was able to get some blank PC sheets printed at work and I had to create pre-gens for each game.

My very 1st game I ran using THAC0 and while the game went well, it just felt clumsy as all get-out. I switched to Ascending Armor Class (AAC) and it just flowed so much easier. I thought that the change from HackMaster to OSE might be too hard, especially since I was running 4 player groups instead of the 6 player groups I was planning for. Each game I had a potential TPK and my Saturday morning game only avoided it because the players wisely caught a mistake I made. The BBG had a slow weapon and had to attack last in each round. I had him attacking first since he had initiative and he was going to kill the last PC fighter, which would have resulted in a TPK. When I was reminded about that weapon being slow, well that on-his-last-hit-point-fighter got in a blow first and downed the BBG.

Alaska RPG Con Table Tent
I tried a mix of old & new stuff (for me) in these games. I bought a bunch of minis this last summer when I was in Upstate New York, and didn't use a single one. Instead I kind of pulled an audible and bought a bunch of cardstock minis (review forthcoming) and used a bunch of tokens as well, most notably some plastic chips to represent dead bodies. I brought my smallest map mat and used it as a backdrop for plastic overlays. I discovered a long time ago it is relatively easy to pre-draw my "rooms" on vinyl and just slap them down as needed. This way I have my drawn rooms, and the players do not have to wait for me to try and draw an accurate room.

This con did a few things that just felt....right. They had tables set aside for open gaming and more tables set aside just for eating & socializing. Each table had wooden "table tents", more like weighted poles, showing the table's number and had a place holder for a little laminated card stating if there were open seats available. The games were all listed on the back wall, but they were loosely organized by day only, and if your game was full, the sheet for that game was pulled.

Alaska RPG Con Open Gaming Table

I liked how this convention was a local con, in almost every sense of the word. There were a handful of vendors and all of the Guests of Honor were Alaskans. I suspect I was the only non-local at the con, but not sure about that. I did hear at least one participant grumble that the convention was in Wasilla and not Anchorage,
and I did talk to James about that. While I'm sure Wasilla is largely for convenience, as 100% of the convention staff was from Wasilla, one of the things he said to me just drove a real point home: he said he wanted the con to "feel like Alaska". Now I've been to Anchorage a half-dozen times for work and the city kind of feels like Alaska-Light. Sure you have the view of the mountains, but with the density and way too many homeless, Anchorage feels more like a shopping mall with a nice backdrop.

Meanwhile, the view from a few feet outside the convention space:

Convention view Day 1

Overall, I enjoyed the con and hope I can attend next year, which will be October 9th-11th, 2026. If you want a good destination small con, Alaska RPG Con might just be up your alley!

Update (edit):

I totally forgot to show off my (limited) convention haul! In no particular order:

Convention Sticker

I thought I picked up a couple of convention stickers, and felt a little greedy taking two, but I like to have a metric but-load (that's an actual unit of measure, granted wrong type) of stickers on my Pelican case luggage so I grabbed more than one and later discovered that they are thin as can be and I had actually taken four! So the two I "needed" went onto my luggage and an extra went onto my little Pelican case I picked up for my dice. Usually I use an even smaller Pelican box, but I had just picked up a larger one that gave me room for pencils.

D&D Cookbook

This book is what I chose from when I won a GM drawing. I had a couple of cookbooks to choose from, a fake pocket watch that actually held some tiny dice (I was tempted, but the dice snob in me said "no"), and a kind of cool dry erase plexiglass PC sheet.

Graymountain Rest

I also picked up this small adventure. It'd basically a one-page dungeon that decided to not screw us over with small print, add another bit of art (or two), and wrap it all up in a decent cardstock cover. I'm a sucker for these kinds of things, so even if I'm not going to use it, I'm likely to buy it.

Minis.....for not having a lot of room to bring stuff back I picked up more minis than I was expecting, which is hilarious to me since I had actually bought Kobold and Goblin minis twice specifically for this trip. What drew me to these minis is that there were different factions packaged so I could have like 18 Kobolds with different thematic sculpts. I am 110% cognizant all I'm doing is adding to my grey pile of shame, but I have to buy some stuff from the convention merchants.

Of course, along with the plastic minis I do not need, I found some cool metal minis I just wanted. A vendor had these groups of Sleestaks that were so cool I had to have two sets. I do have an idea on how to use them, but like the unpainted minis it'll most likely be an adventure that goes unwritten.

DCC #100 Box Set with extra goodies

I bid on this DCC Box set, which had bunch of packaged add-ons that aren't in the still-shrink wrapped box. I have no idea if I got this as a good deal or not, but that isn't too big of a concern.

NOT PICTURED: I pre-ordered a convention T-Shirt and bought another one (for my mom). I think I was supposed to get a free shirt, or partial refund on my badge, or something, for running 5 games, but since I signed up before that was a thing, I didn't feel like I was owed anything and that's one less expense for the con.

ALSO NOT PICTURED AND TECHNICALLY NOT A CONVENTION HAUL: I had to head back to Anchorage a bit earlier than I wanted, because I assumed the truck scrape would eat up some time (not really), so I had time to stop in at Bosco's. They had donated to the convention so I made it a point to recognize that with a quick thanks and I managed to find like 8 issues of a hard-to-find Silver Age(ish) comic.
